The club

Sunday mornings on the black sand

Panah Lovina is run the way Indonesia's horseback archery clubs have always run: as a community that meets every week, sets up its own track, and brings new riders along at their own pace.

Every Sunday before the heat, members walk the horses from the stable to the beach track. Helpers lay the rope lines, check the ground and the tack, and set the targets. Beginners work on the ground range beside the track while riders take their passes. By nine the targets come down, someone makes coffee, and the morning turns into a long conversation about release hands and horse temperaments.

Visitors staying in Lovina are welcome to watch, ask questions and, if they have booked, shoot their first arrows with a coach.

  • One club session a week Sunday 06:00 to 09:00, every week of the year except Nyepi.
  • Four horses, all trained for the track Local Bali ponies and one Sandalwood gelding, calm with new riders.
  • Two coaching lines A ground-archery coach and a riding coach, so you progress on both at once.
  • Traditional dress at events Members ride in Balinese and Nusantara attire for demonstrations and competitions.

Training path

Four stages, in the order the track demands

Nobody shoots from a moving horse on their first day. The path below is the sequence every rider follows, and each stage has a clear test before the next one opens.

  1. Ground school

Range beside the track · 6 sessions

Stance, thumb-draw with a traditional horsebow, nocking by feel, and a clean release. You finish when you can group five arrows on a 20 m face without looking at the string.

  2. Saddle school

    Stable paddock · 8 sessions

A correct seat, balance without the reins, walk and trot, then a steady canter with your hands free. You finish when you can ride the track at a canter holding only the bow.

  3. Track

    Beach track · ongoing

Shooting at a walk, then a trot, then a canter, with the horse on a lead at first. You finish when you can take a full Masahee pass with three arrows loosed at speed.

  4. Competition

    Regional and national events

Masahee, Qabaq and serial-shoot formats, scored to the rules used in Indonesia's national league. Juniors ride in the under-16 division.

Disciplines

The three formats we train for

These are the categories ridden at Indonesia's national horseback archery league events.

Masahee

Three targets set along a 99 m course. The rider takes one pass at a canter and loosens one arrow at each target in turn. Scored on hits and on time.

Qabaq

Two targets at one station, one placed high and one low. The rider shoots upward at the first and downward at the second within the same pass.

Serial shoot

Three targets taken from the front, the side and behind. The hardest format to learn, because the last arrow is a full Parthian shot over the horse's tail.

The club does not ride on Nyepi or during Galungan week. Sessions move indoors to the covered range in heavy rain.

Coaches

Two coaches, two skills

Head archery coach

Traditional horsebow specialist. Teaches the thumb draw, arrow handling on the move and release under pressure. Runs ground school and the junior program.

Head riding coach

Trains the club's horses and every rider's seat. Responsible for saddle school and for deciding when a rider is ready to take the track hands-free.

Coach names, photos and certifications go here once confirmed. See the README for the full list of placeholders.

Find us

Singaraja, between the hills and the dolphins

Our ground range and stable are on the west side of Singaraja, the old capital of Bali, in Buleleng regency. The Sunday beach track is on the black-sand coast at Pantai Penimbangan. Lovina's hotels are ten minutes west along the coast road, so a 06:00 session fits neatly after the dawn dolphin boats return.

Questions

Before you come

I have never ridden a horse. Can I still try horseback archery?

Yes. The visitor taster puts you on a led horse at a walk for your mounted shots. Anything faster than a walk needs saddle school first.

How old do children need to be?

Eight for ground archery, ten for the saddle. Juniors ride only on the club's two smallest ponies and always with a lead until they pass saddle school.

What kind of bow do you use?

Asiatic-style horsebows, around 25 to 35 lb, shot with a thumb draw. The club has bows for all sizes. You can bring your own if it has no shelf, sight or stabiliser.

Can I just watch the Sunday session?

Yes, from the public side of the rope. Arrive before 07:00 to see the canter passes. Stay for coffee afterwards and ask the coaches anything.

Do you compete?

Members who finish the track stage are entered in regional events and, when selected, national league rounds in Java and beyond. The club travels together.
